Statutory Instruments (Rules, Regulations and Orders)

Secondary legislation should be cited by their names, dates and serial numbers, abbreviated to SIs.   

Statutory Instrument: Title | Year, SI Year/Number

Footnote format

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, SI 2005/1643.

Pinpointing part or parts (within an Order), reg or regs (within) or r or rr (within Rules)

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005, SI 2005/1643, reg 3.

European Union

EU Treaty or Protocols

The main source for EU legislation is the Official Journal of the European Union (OJ), which comprises two series: L series - official source for EU legislation and C series - information and notices.  

EU legislation is freely available on EUR-Lex which links to OJ series and is better for referencing. 

Include the Title [Year of publication] OJ series Issue/page numbers:

Consolidated Version of the Treaty on European Union [2008] OJ C115/13.

EU Regulations, Directives, Decisions, Recommendations and Opinions

Cite Regulations, Directives, Decisions, Recommendations and Opinions by giving the legislation type, number and title, followed by publication details in the OJ. Note that the year precedes the running number in citations to Directives, but follows it in citations to Regulations.
