An appendix comes at the end of an assignment (after the reference list) and can be used to contain information that is relevant to the work but too large to fit within the body of the text. This might include, but is not limited to, transcripts of interviews, examples of surveys, or tables of data.
Information within appendices will generally be that which you have gathered or collected yourself. Appendices should not be used to contain quotes and information from other sources so that they don't contribute to your word count. If your module leader hasn't set out appendices as an element to be used within that particular assignment it is always recommend that you check with them whether their use would be appropriate before doing so.
Your appendices should have a clear labelling system (such as Appendix 1, Appendix 2, Appendix 3 etc.). Each appendix should also be given a title explaining what it covers. For example, "Appendix 1: Interview with Student A"
When discussing information contained within the appendices you would then refer to the relevant appendix within the body of your text in a similar way as you would to providing an in-text citation:
"...as discussed during the interview with Student A (see Appendix 1) there is a need for..."
"A survey was distributed to all participants comprising of 10 questions (see Appendix 2)."
There may be occasions where your appendices contain information from, or reference to, other sources. If this is the case, the information source must be acknowledged and referenced in the same way you would within the main body of the assignment.
Provide an in-text citation within the appendix and include a full reference within the assignment's reference list.
If the information within the appendix has been generated by you, e.g. from an interview, focus group, survey or other investigation, you do not need to include a reference for this in your reference list. Simply refer to the relevant appendix within the body of the assignment as described in the "Labelling and referring to appendices" box.
