Referencing guide

Referencing overview

In academic writing, it's essential that you cite (state) your sources of information and ideas. To ensure readers know where you found the information you must include references

You need to reference all the sources that you use in your assignments - by citing them in the main body of your assignment (an in-text reference) and compiling a full reference list at the end of your work.

There are generally three referencing styles used at Solent University:

Harvard Solent

  • This is the general referencing style used.  If your lecturer has told you to use a different style or provided you with specific guidance, please follow that instead.

APA referencing style

  • APA is used by Psychology students.

OSCOLA

  • OSCOLA is used by Law students (students on other courses referencing legal sources should follow the Harvard Solent guidance for that source).

Access the guidance for the style you are using via the links above or in the main menu.

You can also learn more about referencing by accessing the succeed@solent tutorial on Referencing.
