Solent Researchers are encouraged to use a reference management program such as RefWorks or Mendeley.
Reference management programs (also known as citation managers or bibliographic management software) provide many useful features that can help you with your research such as:
• storing and organising your references
• generating citations and bibliographies in the style you prefer; and,
• easily converting referencing styles to suit publication requirements.
RefWorks is supported at Solent. You can export references directly from the library catalogue, databases and even Google Scholar directly into RefWorks and format them into Harvard SSU or another style as required. There is also a tool that can grab webpages and import them into your account.
If you use RefWorks it will do most of the work for you, but it will make mistakes as it can only work with the data it can see - garbage in, garbage out. Check the output before submitting anything.
For more help and guidance visit the Solent RefWorks guide.
Mendeley and Zotero are two other reference management packages used by researchers. Mendeley is popular and has additional features such as the ability to collaborate with other researchers. The free edition has up to 2GB of personal storage. Zotero is free and open-source software for managing bibliographic data and related research materials.
The library offers support with referencing. The recommended University style is Harvard SSU, however we also support APA.
