Solent University Research Repository

Solent University Research Repository (Pure) is the institutional repository for Solent University since 2018. Formally Solent Electronic Archive (SEA), it was established in 2010 as a permanent and secure online archive of research materials produced by researchers at Solent University.

Pure provides public access to electronic copies of peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, working papers, reports, book chapters and doctoral theses by Solent authors. You can explore Solent’s research here: Solent University Research RepositoryPure is maintained by staff from Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) and the library. Please contact us for help and advice.

This guide has information for Solent researchers on making deposits into Pure and has links to supporting policies. Please share new deposits with the library, who will include them on your Pure profile on your behalf. Email pure@solent.ac.uk or use the Pure deposit form.

Open access and the REF

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the system for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education institutions. The open access requirements for the next REF have not yet been published. For now, we are following the REF 2021 open access policy and guidance until further notice.

REF 2021 required that any papers published in academic journals (as well as some conference papers) had to be made open access within three months of acceptance. If this criterion is not met, the publication could not form part of Solent's submission to the REF. This is why we have to have the date of acceptance in Pure, as well as the date of publication. Exceptions can be made for embargoed publications, but they must still have been uploaded to Pure within that time scale.

Depositing FAQs

To be eligible for submission to the REF and to comply with Solent’s Open Access Policy, authors should upload the final accepted manuscripts of articles, and conference proceedings published with an International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). All other outputs are encouraged (e.g. book chapters).

As soon as an article is accepted for publication. The accepted manuscript must be deposited within three months of acceptance to be eligible for submission to the REF.

No. If your paper is published on the publisher’s website (gold open access), so under a licence that permits copying and reuse, you do not need to deposit the author accepted manuscript in Pure.

To make a deposit, you can email pure@solent.ac.uk or use the Pure deposit form. We will let you know when this has been uploaded and of any publisher embargoes that may need to be applied.
