Transformative agreements

What is a transformative agreement?

This is an agreement between a publisher and an institution that allows affiliated, corresponding authors to publish their research open access in selected journals. They are sometimes referred to as read and publish deals or transformative/transitional agreements. Essentially, the cost for open access publishing will have been met centrally, and so there is no additional cost to the author.

Can I select the licence?

Some publishers will offer you the choice of licence upon submission, otherwise the default will be CC BY. If you are a funded author (e.g. UKRI, Wellcome Trust), you are required to select a CC BY licence if this isn't selected for you. Check the process with your funder to request a different licence other than CC BY if required. If you are not funded, you can choose the licence, however we recommend that you select CC BY licence to maximise the re-use potential of the research.
