A-Z Harvard Solent Referencing examples

Journal Article

Follow the format below for a journal article regardless of whether it was accessed as a print or electronic copy (this includes articles accessed via resources such as Google Scholar).  You supply details of the article so your reader can access the same title in any format.

In-text reference examples 

Kopplin (2023, p.891) makes the point that the "fashion industry has been identified as one of the major impact factors on climate change and environmental pollution."  

Fashion is an industry that is heavily linked to both climate change and pollution within the environment... (Kopplin 2023, p.891).

 

Reference list format

AUTHOR, Year of publication. Title of article. Title of journal, volume number(issue or part number), pages
 

Reference list example

KOPPLIN, C.S., 2023. Sports fashion and sustainability: a perfect match? International journal of sports marketing & sponsorship, 24(5), 891–912

 


Journals without volume numbers

If the journal does not have a volume number and part number use the publication date instead.  

MESSMER, M., 2003. Public speaking success strategies. The national public accountant, Nov 2003, 26

 


Journals without part numbers 

Some journals are published without part numbers, if it is not present, omit it from the reference.

 


Article number instead of page number

Sometimes online journals use article numbers instead of official page numbers.  If you are referencing an online article which has an article number instead of a page range, include the word 'article' and use the article number instead of the page range followed by [no pagination]

 

In-text reference example

As has been indicated... (Cavalcanti 2021).

Cavalcanti (2021) has indicated that...
 

Reference list format

AUTHOR(S), Year of publication. Title of article. Title of journal, volume number, article number: ### [no pagination]

 

Reference list example
CAVALCANTI, E.J.C., 2021. Energy, exergy and exergoenvironmental analyses on gas-diesel fuel marine engine used for trigeneration system. Applied thermal engineering, 184, article no: 116211 [no pagination]

 

Notes:

If you refer to information displayed in the PDF version of the article, you can use the article number and the page number you have referred to.

Example: if referring to content from page 6 use (Cavalcanti 2021, 116211-6) 

 


Page numbers in your in-text references 

You may want to include the page number or number range indicating where you found the information you are referring to for some sources. For guidance on how to do this see the ‘Page numbers for in-text references’ section.

Include the details of both authors in the in-text citations and the full reference list.

Only the first author surname is reversed in the full reference list entry.

It is clear that there is a concern around the "extreme information overload" (Vidic and Greene 2024, p.35).

Page numbers in your in-text references 

You may want to include the page number or number range indicating where you found the information you are referring to for some sources. For guidance on how to do this see the ‘Page numbers for in-text references’ section.

Include the details of all three authors in both the in-text citations and the full reference list.

Only the first author surname is reversed in the full reference list entry.

Page numbers in your in-text references 

You may want to include the page number or number range indicating where you found the information you are referring to for some sources. For guidance on how to do this see the ‘Page numbers for in-text references’ section.

If your source has four or more authors, just include the first author in both the in-text citation and full reference list entry.  You will need to add et al. after the first author to indicate there were multiple additional authors.

Page numbers in your in-text references 

You may want to include the page number or number range indicating where you found the information you are referring to for some sources. For guidance on how to do this see the ‘Page numbers for in-text references’ section.

A source may sometimes have a corporate author rather than an individual or several people named as author.

A corporate author is an organisation or company, for example, that created the information source.

Add a corporate author by including the full name both in your in-text citation and in your full reference list.

…aims to provide a top-class university education for all those qualified and able to benefit (Southampton Solent University 2015).
